A comparison of power grid models in the European context

A high-performance European-wide power grid is needed in order to integrate renewable energies into existing systems within the framework of the energy transition, while maintaining a high level of supply security. Grid modelling is becoming more and more important in terms of planning such power grid. The MODEX-Net research project involves an examination of existing grid models taking into account the European context. The goal is to harmonise grid comparison criteria and the results of these comparisons, therefore increasing the comparability, transparency and development potential of grid models.

Harmonised grid modelling is necessary for the planning of an efficient European power grid with high penetration of renewable energy sources. However, a wide range of models has been developed as a result of various methodological approaches. These models as well as their input data need to be harmonised in order to understand the impact of modelling on the results.

The aim of the MODEX-Net project is to compare the existing transmission grid models using model experiments. The role of flexibilities on the supply and demand side is also taken into account. Standardisation of input datasets will allow developers and users to evaluate the different modelling approaches and their development potential.

Scientists from the Institute of Networked Energy Systems are taking part in the MODEX-Net project by providing the eTraGo model and its datasets. This model is part of the eGo cross-voltage grid planning tool, which was developed in a separate research project. Further tasks in the project include examining the impact of the methods used to calculate electricity generation on the energy model simulation results. The scientists at DLR-VE are therefore providing particular support for the project in the areas of energy simulation, optimisation and evaluation.
