Civil supersonic aircraft have the potential to significantly reduce the travel time on many routes. To date, there are no general regulations for civil supersonic aircraft. On the one hand manufacturers are challenged to make critical design decisions without confidence that they will meet future international standards. On the other hand, authorities are challenged to define certification standards without sufficient data. As a consequence, scientifically-based data for environmental impacts of civil supersonic transport is required to support national and European authorities. Objective of the STORMIE project is to a build a research platform for the design of civil supersonic aircraft and predict the resulting environmental impacts. DLR is acting as a virtual manufacturer between actual manufacturers and authorities. Three representative supersonic aircraft concepts will be designed (2x business jet, 1x airliner) and their impacts on the environment will be analyzed using numerical methods with different fidelity. By assessing all environmental impacts that are relevant are considered.

In order to ensure flyability of the designed aircraft concepts, flight mechanical models are generated. Possible conflicts with subsonic transport are analyzed. The results will be presented in the ICAO CAEP working groups by the nominated experts to inform the discussion of certification standards for supersonic aircraft. STORMIE opens up various opportunities for collaboration with international partners. The configurations designed in the project and the results shall be shared with international partners as long as export control regulations are satisfied.
AS is leading the project and contributes to the conceptual design, the aerodynamic design (DLR TAU Code) and the prediction of the landing and take-off noise.
