Development of customised joining technologies for sustainable materials

The Institute of Vehicle Concepts offers the development of customised joining technologies for sustainable material solutions in order to realise sustainable and low-emission vehicle concepts in holistic, hybrid lightweight construction.

For the scientific investigation of innovative joining technologies, we have a high-performance laboratory infrastructure with a wide range of mechanical joining systems and equipment for bonding in the entire spectrum from structurally rigid to flexible-elastic.

In addition, we have an extensive testing infrastructure for the comprehensive characterisation and validation of joints in order to ensure optimum integrity of the joining element in the component.

Our services in the field of joining technology include

  • Analysis, characterisation and evaluation of joining processes and joints
  • Production of joining samples under reproducible conditions
  • Parameter studies
  • Production and optical analysis of micrographs
  • Static and dynamic testing of joints (e.g. shear tensile / pull-out tests)
  • Environmental simulations (cold, heat and humidity)
  • Corrosion tests
  • Climate change, salt spray and condensation water tests
  • Production of prototype components
  • Independent, technology-neutral analysis of joining technology solutions
  • Investigation and evaluation of the transfer potential of existing joining technologies
