Data-link tower

The institute has high-performance air-ground data links for investigations into air-ground integration, remote aircraft guidance and for supporting flight tests. The striking landmark is a 30 metre high antenna tower, which is clearly visible from Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport, among other places.

The core element of the system is an experimental S-band data link, which can transmit both audio signals and data in parallel and broadband in both directions between the ground station and the aircraft using full-duplex transmission.

The ground station is accessible via fibre optic cables, intranet and internet both inside and outside DLR. This makes it relatively easy to provide measurement data as well as audio and video transmissions and to integrate systems on board the flight test vehicles into the DLR simulation network for further research work.

In addition to the S-band data link, other data links are available that are characterised by different ranges and data rates. Flexible VHF data links (Very High Frequency, VHF), as used in telecommunications networks (Global System for Mobile Communications, GSM), can be utilised as required. Depending on requirements, employees integrate new, specialised data links into DLR's test aircraft and the associated ground structure.

The extensively equipped test rooms allow users to test their systems extensively and easily. The proximity to the DLR apron and the direct connection to Braunschweig-Wolfsburg Airport are invaluable advantages for projects.

Close cooperation with colleagues at the National Experimental Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems in Cochstedt has resulted in compatible systems that enable comprehensive flight tests.

The ground systems belonging to the data links are mobile and can be used flexibly. This means that flight tests can be planned and carried out in Germany and Europe.
