DLR rotor tower with cooling system in the foreground
The DLR rotor tower with test rig for model rotors has been converted into an icing test rig for rotors that is unique in Europe and on which technologies for de-icing/ice prevention can be tested on blades with a radius of up to 1.9 metres. During rotational testing, enormous centrifugal accelerations act on the blade, helping to get rid of ice build-up faster and with less energy input. Rotational testing can therefore be used to determine the actual energy required for a de-icing system and to optimise it for use in rotorcraft.
