Applying and Integrating AI in Safety-Critical Systems
AI algorithms form the foundation for complex functions such as image recognition, speech recognition, and text generation. In safety-critical industries like aviation, these functions present new opportunities.
The use cases are diverse and include aircraft development, innovative features for both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as maintenance support. Accordingly, the Institute of Flight Systems is investigating how AI functions can be advantageously applied. Example applications include image recognition for aircraft maintenance and their system components, environmental perception for drones, speech recognition to alleviate pilot workload in the cockpit, and text generators to enhance creativity in the development of new aircraft systems.
Integration of Artificial Intelligence Functionality in Safety-Critical Systems
While AI applications offer significant opportunities, they also present numerous challenges for implementation. Particularly in safety-critical areas, trust in the results produced by AI functions is essential. At the same time, transferring these functions to real flight hardware poses challenges related to performance and certification. Accordingly, the Institute of Flight Systems is exploring how AI functions can be integrated into safety-critical systems. This includes investigating how AI functions can be developed and validated transparently, how they can be integrated into actual aircraft hardware, and how they can be monitored and reconfigured during operation.
