- 9th Human Physiology Workshop on December 6, 2024
- Research network to train scientists in the field of human physiology
- Anouk Slaghekke and Niklas Pilz received jury and audience award
- Photographer Karsten Thormaehlen showed material from his work with centenarians and senior athletes
On December 6, 2024, the 9th Human Physiology Workshop (HPW) took place at the aerospace medicine research facility :envihab in Cologne. Almost 100 young scientists of 30 different nationalities took part on site and online and used the meeting to present and discuss their topics and data.
The two speakers Anouk Slaghekke and Niklas Pilz received a special award: Anouk Slaghekke from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was honoured with the Jury Award for her presentation "Unraveling the Muscle Microcirculation Maze - Diffusion Deficits in Long COVID and ME/CFS". Niklas Pilz from Hannover Medical School and Charité Berlin received the Audience Award for the presentation "Machine Learning enabled Blood Pressure Measurement from Impedance Cardiography data: A Promising Concept for Human Spaceflight".
At the end of the workshop, photographer Karsten Thormaehlen showed film and photo material from his work titled "Young at Heart". He is best known for his photographic portraits of centenarians and senior athletes and also showed pictures he had taken at this year's World Masters Athletics Championship in Gothenburg. The DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine had also conducted the TaFMAC study there, in which the health data of track and field master athletes is recorded.
The Human Physiology Workshop is organised annually by the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine together with the German Space Agency at DLR. The aim is to support a research network that can train and educate scientists in the field of human physiology.
