User Support

Materials science research on board the International Space Station (ISS) is based on two important facilities: the Electromagnetic Levitator (EML) and the Materials Science Laboratory (MSL).

The EML is installed in the European Columbus module of the ISS. Preparatory experiments are carried out on the TEXUS research rocket and in the TEMPUS facility during parabolic flights. Both the MSL and the EML are aimed at research in the areas of solidification, crystal growth and diffusion of mass as well as the thermophysical properties of metals. The preparation, execution and evaluation of the first series of experiments in space will be coordinated by the Institute of Materials Physics in Space within the DLR Microgravity User Support Centre.
