Lloyd's Register takes over certification of DLR modular research vessel

Lloyd's Register
- Lloyd's Register was commissioned by Lloyd Werft on 21 March to assess the construction of the DLR research vessel.
- Due to the modular design of the ship, the classification society, Lloyd Werft and the Institute of Maritime Energy Systems are already working closely together.
The classification society Lloyd's Register was commissioned by Lloyd Werft to assess and certify the modular research vessel commissioned at the beginning of the year. Its task is to check compliance with all legal requirements - from the technical reliability of the ship's construction to ship safety, environmental protection and working conditions on board. Compliance with the applicable minimum standards is confirmed by certification from the classification society.
Particular attention is being paid to the utilisation and operation of energy generation components. As the ship will have a modular design and it should be possible to replace individual energy system components, this requires close cooperation between the parties involved from the outset.
New technologies that are trialled on board must be integrated into certified ship operations - while strictly safeguarding the crew, the environment and the ship. Scientific measurement series and technical trials make it possible to analyse the reliability, efficiency and feasibility of the technologies under real conditions. Aspects that were previously tested and certified prior to the on-board installation of components on land are thus analysed during active ship operation.
This practice is crucial for the maritime industry's planning security when investing in future-proof solutions: there is currently a lack of real comparative data for many alternative energy systems and new types of fuel. DLR is delighted to have Lloyd's Register as an experienced and innovative partner for this task.
