Kick-off of the newbuild project - DLR meets with Lloyd's Register, BG Verkehr and SDC

Meeting with Lloyd's Register, SDC and BG Verkehr
  • On 13 May 2025, BG Verkehr, Lloyd's Register, SDC, and DLR met for the official launch of the DLR research vessel newbuild project.
  • The ship must comply with German and international regulations to guarantee high safety and operational safety standards.
  • The kick-off meeting has laid the foundation for the next phase of detailed ship design.

DLR met with representatives of the classification society Lloyd's Register, the SDC Ship Design & Consult GmbH and the Berufsgenossenschaft Verkehrswirtschaft Post-Logistik Telekommunikation (BG Verkehr) for the German flag in Hamburg. Cooperation with the classification society and the flag authority is of central importance for the successful construction of the research vessel.

The new modular research vessel will sail under the German flag. This not only means compliance with German and international regulations, but also guarantees the highest safety standards and a correspondingly high level of operational safety.

The meeting between DLR, SDC, Lloyd's Register and BG Verkehr focussed on the technical and regulatory cornerstones for the further development of the design. Dr Gesa Ziemer, DLR project manager, emphasised: "I am very pleased that things are now formally getting underway. An important basis has been laid for the upcoming project phase, in which the detailed design of the ship will be closely examined and concretised by the most important authorities."

The successful kick-off meeting has paved the way for the next phase in the construction of the new modular research vessel - a further step towards a state-of-the-art multi-purpose research vessel for maritime research under the German flag.
