Institute Director Carsten Agert stresses the importance of flexibilities in the energy system

Prof. Carsten Agert emphasised in the Parliamentary Group on sector integration that flexibility in the energy system is essential in two respects: They are both a prerequisite for technical regulation and security of supply as well as for balanced pricing on the electricity markets.
  • Institute Director Prof. Carsten Agert represented DLR in the German Bundestag's parliamentary group on sector integration.
  • Flexibilities in the energy system are of great relevance for balanced pricing; small-scale areas should also be utilised.
  • Focus: Energy, sector integration

The importance of sector integration in electricity market design was the subject of a keynote speech by Institute Director Prof. Carsten Agert on 30th November 2023 in the German Bundestag's parliamentary group on sector integration.

Agert emphasised that flexibility in the energy system is essential in two respects: They are a prerequisite for technical regulation and security of supply as well as helping to achieve balanced pricing on the electricity markets. However, while the relevance for flexibility of e.g. large-scale storage is already largely recognised today, small-scale flexibilities in particular are currently still completely untapped, according to Agert. Electric vehicles, home storage systems or heat storage in conjunction with combined heat and power generation or heat pumps have the potential to be important components of the future energy supply as small-scale flexibilities.

The DLR Institute of Networked Energy Systems has developed an innovative approach to analysing and evaluating energy policy instruments and mechanisms for the market integration of renewable energies and flexibility options with the agent-based energy market model AMIRIS, which is also available to the public. DLR and the Institute of Networked Energy Systems contribute their expertise on electricity market design to the "Platform Climate Neutral Electricity System" organised by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.
