- In a video message to participants, Institute Director Carsten Agert called for more planning security for companies that have already invested in H2 technologies and infrastructure.
- With regard to hydrogen topics, the congress is considered an important platform for exchange between industry and science on political framework conditions and technological innovations.
- Focus: Energy, Hydrogen
The Institute of Networked Energy Systems will be represented by two speakers at this year's hydrogen congress "beyondgas" from 23 to 25 September 2025 in Oldenburg: Dr Alexander Dyck, Head of Urban and Building Technologies Department, will speak in the session "Hydrogen Research and Innovations 'Made in Europe'" about efficient H2 production approaches and other DLR research topics along the value chain in the hydrogen market. Additionally, Institute Director Prof Dr Carsten Agert will participate in a panel discussion at the end of the three-day event, looking ahead to the upcoming challenges for the German hydrogen economy. The congress is considered an important platform for exchange between industry and science on political framework conditions and technological innovations in the hydrogen economy. Registrations are still possible.
A key focus of this year's congress, which takes place under the motto "Change Request for the Hydrogen Economy", is the discussion of possible development paths for the hydrogen economy. Both market activation and acceleration of the hydrogen market depend significantly on hydrogen prices on the production side: too high prices lead to lower demand, make investments in production facilities less attractive, and thus slow down the development of hydrogen infrastructure. "That's why we need to make hydrogen production more affordable," argues Agert. "Current regulation – particularly at the European level – increases the cost of a product that already faces significant challenges on its way to market." With regard to existing investments, Agert also appeals for more planning security for companies that have already taken significant risks: "In everything we do to accelerate progress, we must not punish the 'first movers'."
The beyondgas congress has been held in Oldenburg since 2021. In combination with an accompanying trade fair for the hydrogen economy, around 400 participants, 90 speakers and approximately 30 exhibitors are expected to attend this year's event. Prominent attendees include Grant Hendrik Tonne, Lower Saxony's Minister for Economics, Transport and Construction, and Kerstin Andreae, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW).
