Energy systems analysis and strategic planning for Morocco

The acceleration of the transition towards renewable energies and the achievement of climate neutrality are urgent global challenges. Measured against these goals, the Kingdom of Morocco also faces new tasks: the integration of renewable energies and synthetic fuels, as well as the establishment of a climate-neutral hydrogen economy. The research project MOREMix-Green, sponsored by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), supports the Moroccan transformation of the energy system and develops an international benchmark model for strategic energy planning.

At the heart of the MOREMix-Green research project is the development and application of an international template for strategic energy planning. This particularly involves strategy development, scientific reference models, and support for pilot projects. In addition, the activation and further education of decision-makers at all levels are crucial. The project contributes to bringing the fundamental research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) into the field of application and thus sets impulses for global climate protection.

The focal points of the Institute of Networked Energy Systems are multifaceted in the context of the MOREMix-Green project: Starting with energy planning, a particular focus is on strengthening national capacities for evidence-based integrated energy planning. This should also be better coordinated with climate targets and investment decisions. In addition, the Institute addresses the reorientation of the role of coal-fired power plants and develops strategies for a gradual exit. In the field of the hydrogen economy, the Institute is working, among other things, to create a system-integrated approach for integrating hydrogen into national energy planning. The role of hydrogen in decarbonisation should be clarified, especially with regard to system flexibility and energy security. Readiness for hydrogen investments and the strategic positioning in emerging international hydrogen and PtX markets must be improved.

In addition to the actual transformation aspects, the Institute is focusing on education and training at universities in order to prepare future specialists for the challenges in redesigning our energy systems. This involves green hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and other Power-to-X aspects, as well as the establishment of a qualified talent pool to support long-term energy and hydrogen strategies. Improved cooperation between universities, research institutions, and policy-relevant processes should also be initiated.
