State-of-the-art collection and analysis of mobility data

MovingLab

The DLR MovingLab provides a modern data collection method based on mobile devices for mobility and transport research. Using the MovingLab, it is possible to collect and analyse data on the mobility behaviour of people as well as data on the use of vehicles

Capturing mobility data
With the DLR MovingLab, we acquire mobility data via smartphones. By flexibly adapting to different issues, the MovingLab significantly supports the analyses of our transport expertise.

The mobility behaviour of people is often recorded in the form of travel logs. In these records, the respondents report on the trips they made on a given date either in writing or online via a questionnaire or verbally in the form of telephone interviews. The information collected typically includes arrival and departure times, journey length, journey purpose and the chosen mode of transport. The retrospectively recorded journeys can be highly inaccurate, as distances, for example, are only estimated. Given the high level of effort required from the participants in such surveys, the survey period is usually limited to one day or very short periods of time. Participants only report their journeys over a longer period of time in exceptional cases.

The DLR MovingLab opens up completely new possibilities for emprical mobility research by collecting mobility data using GPS & sensor data via smartphones or GPS loggers. The position and movement sensors of such devices can be used to determine the exact location of a person or vehicle. Acceleration and speed profiles help to identify the mode of transport. The advantage of this method is the automatic, precise recording of routes. All the participants have to do is carrying the mobile device with them and switch on the tracker. The minimal effort required from the participants also enables long-term surveys. In addition, this data can be supplemented by surveys in order to assess the personally observed situation. The survey system is freely configurable for this purpose and allows for a variety of survey methods.
