"Hydrogen Storage XL" the DLR Enersphere Approach
The HyStor project enabled the Process Technologies department of the Institute of Lightweight Structures to take the first steps towards a composite hydrogen tank. Starting with the design, initial concept ideas and production trials, a complete demonstrator was created. This has a length of 2.5 metres and a diameter of 3 metres. It was successfully deposited and cured using the research infrastructure of the ZLP Stade. This video gives an impression of the production process.

Project video ProTec-NSR

Building on the GRONQA and EVo projects as well as the third-party funded projects AZUR, AZIMUT, SARISTU, MAAXIMUS and DFP-WingCover from 2010-2016, the Protec-NSR project focuses on the development of methods, simulation tools, technologies and systems for quality-assured, simulation-based and productive manufacturing of fibre composite structures. Individual processes are also interlinked and demonstrated in an overall process.

The Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems, the Institute of Structures and Design, the Institute of Materials Research and the Centre for Lightweight Production Technology (ZLP) with its sites in Stade and Augsburg at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have jointly developed automated processes for manufacturing components from the high-performance material fibre-metal laminate.

Project video MAAXIMUS

As part of the MAAXIMUS project (more affordable aircraft through extended, integrated and mature numerical sizing), the DLR site in Stade is working on solutions for the high-precision, automated and quality-assured production of aircraft fuselage shells made from fibre-reinforced high-performance materials. Important aspects here are fully automated skin placement, the production and integration of stiffening elements, the adaptation and optimisation of moulding tools and production processes through to the production of full-scale structures.
