Best Poster Award at the IEEE GRSS IADF School - Nikita Basargin

22 September 2023 – We are pleased to announce that our colleague Nikita Basagin received the Best Poster Award, endowed with 500 Euro sponsored by ESA, during the IADF (Image Analysis and Data Fusion) School of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). This school focuses on applying computer vision (CV) methods to address challenges in remote sensing, it contains a series of lectures on the existing methods utilized for analyzing satellite images, along with the challenges encountered. Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Andreas Heinzel

31 August 2023 – We are pleased to announce that our colleague Andreas Heinzel successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Concepts for SAR tomographic imaging of buried objects" at the University of Ulm on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. This dissertation presents new concepts for the detection of buried explosive ordnance by extending SAR tomographic methods, thereby increasing the probability of detection. The effectiveness of these algorithms was verified by measurements with a rail-based radar system. We congratulate very much.

DLR Senior Scientist - Pau Prats

27 July 2023 - We are very pleased to announce that the DLR Executive Board has decided to award our colleague Pau Prats the title of "Senior Scientist". The award ceremony took place yesterday, July 26, 2023, during the event Science BBQ at the Oberpfaffenhofen site. The title “Senior Scientist” is awarded annually by the German Aerospace Center to scientists who distinguish themselves in the field of fundamental research as well as to scientists whose work is application-oriented and focusses in particular on project work.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Alexander Haas

26 July 2023 – It is a pleasure for us to announce that our colleague Alexander Haas has successfully defended his PhD yesterday on July 25, 2023 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He convinced the examinants with a very nice presentation about his topic entitled “Charakterisierung von Gebäudestrukturen mit Mikrowellenmessverfahren” which is dealing with the radar-based characterization of buildings for the improvement of energy savings. Congratulations, Alex!

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Carlos Villamil-Lopez

25 July 2023 – We are more than happy to announce that Carlos Villamil-Lopez has very successfully passed his PhD exam at the TU Munich today on 25th July 2023! His thesis is entitled “Change detection for monitoring of man-made objects using time series of very high resolution spaceborne SAR images”. The doctoral degree "Dr.-Ing." is awarded at TUM by the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy. Congratulations, Carlos!

"Best Academic Trajectory" and "Best Master’s Thesis" - Victor Mustieles Pérez

24 July 2023 – We are pleased to inform you that our colleague Victor Mustieles Pérez received two awards at the ‘Awards for Excellence in Telecommunication Engineering COIT-AEIT’ in its 43rd edition, organized by the Spanish Official College of Telecommunication Engineers (COIT) and sponsored by different companies. They yearly recognize the best projects (PhD and Master’s theses) and university trajectories in the field of Telecommunication Engineering in Spain, so they are the most important ones in Spain at this level. Victor Mustieles Pérez received the award for the best academic trajectory, sponsored by Huawei, and the award for the best Master’s thesis within the topic of ‘Government satellite services’, with his work entitled ‘Radar tracking algorithms for space debris monitoring applications’, sponsored by Hisdesat. The ceremony took place last 29th June in Madrid.

IGARSS'23 Student Paper Award (2x) - Andreas Benedikter and Maxwell Nogueira Peixoto

21 July 2023 - This year there was a very tough competition for the student best paper awards at IGARSS with more than 270 papers being submitted. After a pre-selection in May, 10 student papers were presented this week in a dedicated oral session at IGARSS. Yesterday evening the awardees were announced: First Place: Andreas Benedikter for the paper titled: “On the Decorrelation Effect of Dry Snow in Differential SAR Interferometry” and Second Place: Maxwell Nogueira Peixoto for the paper titled: “A Novel Technique to Generate Digital Elevation Models in a Single Pass Using a Cluster of SmallSats”. Both colleagues are with our Institute. The pictures here were taken during the awards ceremony. Congratulations to both colleagues for this outstanding achievement!

2023 IEEE Dennis J. Picard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications - Alberto Moreira

21 May 2023 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Prof. Dr. Alberto Moreira, Director of the Microwaves and Radar Institute, was awarded the IEEE Dennis J. Picard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications during the IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit and Honors Ceremony in May 2023 in Atlanta, USA. This prestigious IEEE award was presented to him for his outstanding achievements in the field of radar remote sensing with the citation, "For leadership and innovative concepts in the design, deployment, and utilization of airborne and space-based radar systems." The whole Institute congratulates him very much!

GRSS IADF Photo Contest 2023 and Helmholtz Image Contest 2023 Traveling Exhibition - Jens Fischer, Joel Amao-Oliva, Muriel Pinheiro, Marc Jaeger, Rolf Scheiber, Martin Keller, Ralf Horn and Andreas Reigber

04 July 2023 – We are happy to announce that our radar image "Medem Rinne seen by Radar Eyes" was among the three winners in the GRSS IADF Photo Contest 2023 and among the TOP 20 images in the Helmholtz Best Scientific Image Contest 2023 which will go on a traveling exhibition through Helmholtz centers. In total there were 162 submissions in this contest. The image is co-authored by Jens Fischer, Joel Amao-Oliva, Muriel Pinheiro, Marc Jaeger, Rolf Scheiber, Martin Keller, Ralf Horn and Andreas Reigber. Promotion zum Dr. sc. - Marcel Stefko

29 March 2023 – We are very pleased to announce that Marcel Stefko has very successfully completed his PhD exam at ETH Zurich today, March 29, 2023! His thesis is entitled "Applications of Bistatic Ku-Band Radar in Snow-Covered Environments". The doctoral degree "Dr. sc." is awarded at ETH Zurich by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG). Congratulations, Marcel!

Best Master’s Thesis Award - João Pedro Turchetti Ribeiro

06 March 2023 – We are happy to announce that the Prof-Cecchini-Award for best Master’s thesis of the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), São José dos Campos, Brazil, in the year of 2022 has been given to our colleague João Pedro Turchetti Ribeiro on the occasion of the Opening Lecture of ITA on March, 06, 2023. The award acknowledges the quality and relevance of his thesis, entitled ‘Concurrent Imaging Mode Applied to High Resolution Wide Swath SAR Imaging’. He graduated as MSc in telecommunications engineering. For these studies, the rector of ITA grants the Prof-Cecchini-Award to the graduate with the best Master’s thesis of the institute each year. Outstanding Paper Award - Maron Schlemon, Martin Schulz und Rolf Scheiber

22 December 2022 - We are pleased to announce that our colleagues Maron Schlemon and Rolf Scheiber (DLR Microwaves and Radar Institute) and Martin Schulz (Technical University of Munich) have been awarded the Outstanding Paper Award at this year's IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC), September 19-23, 2022, organized by the IEEE Boston Section, for their talk "Resource-Constrained Optimizations For Synthetic Aperture Radar On-Board Image Processing ". We sincerely congratulate them on this extraordinary success!

ERC Starting Grant - Michelangelo Villano

25 November 2022 – Dr. Michelangelo Villano from the Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR) is one of the laureates of the European Research Council (ERC)'s 2022 Starting Grants competition. ERC grants are awarded on the sole criterion of peer-reviewed excellence to high-risk, high-reward proposals that may revolutionise science and potentially lead to innovation. The funded project is entitled “Distributed Radar Interferometry and Tomography Using Clusters of Smallsats (DRITUCS)” and aim at developing cost-effective Earth observation concepts for frequent monitoring of ice volume and forest structure changes and demonstrate them using swarms of drones.

Best Academic Record - Victor Mustieles Pérez

18 November 2022 – We are happy to announce that an award "Best Academic Record" has been given to our colleague Victor Mustieles Pérez. The award acknowledges not only his thesis but his academic career so far. He graduated as MSc in telecommunications engineering. For these studies, the rector of the university ‘Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’ awards the university’s gold pin to the graduate with the best academic record each year. We wish him all the best for his further career.

19 October 2022 – We are pleased to announce that our colleague Changhyun Choi successfully defended today, on October 19, 2022, his PhD at ETH Zurich. His thesis is entitled "Combining TanDEM-X Interferometric SAR and GEDI Lidar Measurements for Improving Forest Height, Structure and Biomass Estimates". Best Paper Award - Markus Peichl

04 October 2022 - We are pleased to announce that our colleague Dr. Matthias Jirousek, DLR Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been awarded the Golden Ticket Poster Award for his poster "High Resolution Imaging of Satellites and Objects in Space with IoSiS" at this year's AMOS conference (Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies Conference), September 27-30, 2022 in Maui, Hawaii, USA. Young Scientist Award (YSA) - Nertjana Ustalli and Michael Pircher

29 September 2022 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleagues Dr. Nertjana Ustalli and Michael Pircher have been awarded the "Young Scientist Award (YSA)" at the 2022 Kleinheubach Meeting, September 27-29, 2022. The title of Dr. Ustalli's paper with co-authors G. Krieger, J. H. M. Mittermayer, M. Villano, and C. Waldschmidt was "MirrorSAR Concept: Phase Synchronization Analysis" and the title of Michael Pircher's paper is "Optimizing the Cross Polarization Performance of a Compact Test Range by Conjugate Matched Field Concept". The selection of a Young Scientist Award (YSA) winner follows a peer review process based on the submitted papers. In addition to originality and creativity, the evaluation criteria include the form and clarity of the submitted work. The award winners were honored in a festive ceremony during the closing event of the Kleinheubach conference. Our warmest congratulations!

MIT-MISTI Grant - Brent Minchew, Matthias Braun, Anke Fluhrer and Thomas Jagdhuber

08 September 2022 - Prof. Dr. Brent Minchew (MIT), Prof. Dr. Matthias Braun (FAU), MSc. Anke Fluhrer (DLR, HR) and Dr. Thomas Jagdhuber (DLR, HR) were awarded the MIT-MISTI grant for the study of cracking in Antarctic ice shelves "Rift Formation in Antarctic Ice Shelves: Constraining the Mechanical Properties of Glacier Ice Using Time-Dependent, High-Resolution Strain-Rate Fields".

ARGUS Science Award 2022 - Christian Huber and Philipp Brücker

10 June 2022 - Our former colleague Christian Huber and our present colleague Philipp Brücker were awarded the ARGUS Science Award 2022 by the company HENSOLDT for their master theses on May 24, 2022. Previously, Hr. Huber conducted his master thesis "Development of Radar Travel Time Transmission Tomography Approaches for Subsurface Ice Exploration" at the DLR Microwaves and Radar Institute in Oberpfaffenhofen and successfully defended it at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). Hr. Brücker's master thesis was „Theoretical Study on Performance Improvement of MW-Class Gyrotrons by External Signal Injection“. He is now working on "Innovative SAR-Bildgebungsverfahren zur verbesserten Extraktion der Rückstreueigenschaften von Zielobjekten mit Hilfe eines drohnenbasierten Radarsystems im Nahbereich" towards a PhD. The ARGUS award was presented during the annual Professor's Day of the company HENSOLDT Sensors GmbH in Ulm. We wish Hr. Huber and Hr. Brücker all the best for the future!

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Nida Sakar

25 May 2022 - It is our pleasure to announce that colleague Nida Sakar has successfully defended her PhD thesis today, this afternoon, at the Technical University of Munich which is entitled: “Processing Approaches for Multistatic Large Along-Track Baseline SAR Constellations”. 26 April 2022 - We are pleased to announce that on April 22, 2022, our colleague Dr. Mark Lützner, Microwaves and Radar Institute, Oberpfaffenhofen, has successfully defended his PhD thesis, which is entitled: “A Satellite Swarm-Based Aperture Synthesis Radiometer in Low Earth Orbit for Earth Observation Applications”. The dissertation of Dr. Lützner has been awarded summa cum laude by the University of the Federal Armed Forces (Universität der Bundeswehr) in Munich.

08 November 2021 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Dr.-Ing. Ronny Hänsch has been elected for being a member in the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) for the period of 2022 - 2024. Dr. Hänsch is IEEE Senior member, chair of the GRSS technical committee on Image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF), and editor in chief of the GRSS eNewsletter.

Chairman of the U.R.S.I. Commission F - Wave Propagation and Remote Sensing - Tobias Rommel

13 December 2021 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Dr. Tobias Rommel was unanimously elected as Chair of U.R.S.I. Commission F (Wave Propagation and Remote Sensing) in the National Committee Germany at the 2021 Kleinheubach Meeting on September 28, 2021. He will take office in September 2022. The International Union of Radio Science (U.R.S.I.) is an international association of scientists for the study of all aspects of electromagnetic waves and is part of the prestigious International Council for Science ICSU.

Otto-Lilienthal-Sabbatical 2021 - Marc Rodriguez-Cassolá

11 November 2021 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Dr. Marc Rodriguez-Cassolá, is one of two awardees of this year's Otto Lilienthal Research Semester of the Society of Friends (GvF) of DLR. He was recognized for his work on the research topic "Study of Processing and Simulation Algorithms for Low-Frequency High-Resolution SAR Systems and Constellations: Implications on Current and Future SAR Mission Concepts". The award ceremony took place on 11 November 2021 at the DLR Space Agency in Bonn. We would like to congratulate him very much!

Young Scientist Award (YSA) - Maxwell Nogueira Peixoto

30 September 2021 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Maxwell Nogueira Peixoto received the "Young Scientist Award (YSA)" at the Kleinheubacher Tagung 2021 which took place 28 -30 September 2021. His contribution, co-authored with Michelangelo Villano und Alberto Moreira, is entitled "A Novel Processing Technique to Suppress Nadir Returns in Staggered Synthetic Aperture Radar". The prize includes 250 Euro, a certificate and the remission of the conference fees. Congratulations, to all co-authors, to this success!

ETH Zurich Silver Medal - Georg Fischer

08 June 2021 - We are pleased to announce that our colleague Georg Fischer has been awarded the ETH Zurich Silver Medal by the Rector of ETH Zurich. The medal honors outstanding doctoral theses and was awarded to him for his work "Modeling of Subsurface Scattering from Ice Sheets for Pol-InSAR Applications".

01 April 2021 - We are very happy to announce that Muriel Pinheiro with co-authors Rolf Scheiber, Joel Amao-Oliva, Marc Jäger, Ralf Horn, Jens Fischer, Martin Keller and Andreas Reigber, all Microwaves and Radar Institute, won the Best Poster Award at the first virtual European Conference on Synthetic Aperture Radar (EUSAR 2021) for their contribution "Airborne SAR Interferometry for Large Scale Mapping of Tidal Flats: The GeoWAM Project". Finalists of Copernicus Master 2020 - Francescopaolo Sica and Andrea Pulella

18 January 2021 - We are happy to announce that our colleagues Francescopaolo Sica and Andrea Pulella reached the final of the Copernicus Master 2020, DLR Environment and Health Challenge. They participated together with the firm CQuest, proposing an idea entitled “Satellite-Based Carbon Sequestration Monitoring” where they analyzed the potential of multi-sensor remote sensing data, together with physical modelling and artificial intelligence, for the retrieval of soil carbon. Congratulations from all colleagues!

Editor of the GRSS eNewsletter – Ronny Hänsch

11 January 2021 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Dr.-Ing. Ronny Hänsch has been appointed to serve as editor of the eNewsletter of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) from January 2021. Dr. Hänsch is IEEE Senior member and chair of the GRSS technical committee on Image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF).

08 December 2020 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Dr. Kostas Papathanassiou has been selected as this year's winner of the Otto Lilienthal sabbatical of the Society of Friends (GvF) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). DLR Science Prize 2020 - Matteo Pardini, Victor Cazcarra-Bes, Kostas Papathanassiou and Irena Hajnsek

07 Dezember 2020 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleagues Matteo Pardini, Victor Cazcarra-Bes, Kostas Papathanassiou and Irena Hajnsek have been awarded the DLR Science Prize 2020. The official award ceremony took place last Friday, December 4, 2020, as part of the DLR Online Executive Dialogue. The DLR Science Prize is awarded annually in recognition of outstanding scientific and technical achievements, especially those of younger employees. This work must be documented in the form of a publication in specialist journals with a review process. The awarded work is: "L- and P-Band 3-D SAR Reflectivity Profiles Versus Lidar Waveforms: The AfriSAR Case" published in IEEE-JSTARS, October 2018. We congratulate very much!

28 October 2020 - We are pleased to announce that the "Gesellschaft von Freunden des DLR" has awarded the "Helmut Rott Prize 2020", donated and offered by Prof. Dr. Helmut Rott, to Dr. Georg Fischer, Microwaves and Radar Institute, DLR Oberpfaffenhofen. He received this award for his work "Modeling of Subsurface Scattering from Ice Sheets for Pol-InSAR Applications". "Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Contest Finalist" - Sushil K. Joshi

30 September 2020 - We are pleased to announce that our colleague Sushil Kumar Joshi has won one of five prizes awarded during the "Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Contest". This contest was held by IEEE during the "IEEE Radar Conference" in Florence, Italy. The best five videos were selected from all submitted videos. They were awarded the title "Finalist". Another video of these five was also awarded the title "Winner" based on an online viewer voting.

"Young Scientist Award" and "Young Scientist Best Paper Award, Second Place" - Fairouz Stambouli

30 September 2020 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Fairouz Stambouli received two prizes at the Kleinheubacher Tagung 2020, which took place online. One is the "Young Scientist Award (YSA)", endowed with 300 Euro, and the other is the "Young Scientist Best Paper Award (YS-BPA), Second Place", endowed with 750 Euro. The awarded paper is entitled "Interleaved Operation Techniques for Multifunctional Syntheric Aperture Radar" and co-authored with Markus Limbach, Tobias Rommel and Marwan Younis. All winners of an award for young scientists were invited to present their work remotely in a special YSA online session. ESA Living Planet Fellowship 2018 - Francescopaolo Sica

15 November 2018 - We are very pleased to announce that our colleague Dr. Francescopaolo Sica is the recipient of the Living Planet Fellowship 2018 from the European Space Agency (ESA). It consists of a two-years Post-Doctoral co-financing program for carrying out a research project at a host Institution in an eligible ESA member state. Francescopaolo won for his project proposal named HI-FIVE, aimed at modeling backscatter signatures and temporal coherence dynamic of Sentinel-1 together with the generation of high-resolution forest-coverage and deforestation maps from InSAR data. 24 October 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Silvan Leinss (ETH Zurich) has been awarded the Helmut Rott Doctoral Candidate Award on October 19, 2017. Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation Young Scientist Award - Michelangelo Villano

12 July 2017 - We are very proud to announce that the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation will be awarding their Young Scientist Award to our colleague Michelangelo Villano on December 13, 2017 during a ceremonious colloquium in Schwanau, Germany. Since 1977, the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation acknowledges with this award highly promising results of young scientists. This award will give him the opportunity to be part of a broad network of young scientists who are engaged in promoting technology research. The foundation provides for this purpose an annual, dedicated budget for related events and publications. The awards ceremony will be accompanied by a 15-minute talk of the award winner. He will receive a silver medal with a relief of Werner von Siemens and a certificate with the appreciation of his recent results.

20 Dezember 2016 - It is a great pleasure to congratulate our colleague Muriel Pinheiro for the very successful defense of her PhD thesis "Multi-Mode SAR Interferometry for High-Precision DEM Generation" yesterday, 20 December 2016, at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She passed with distinction. With the results of her thesis we are now able to create Digital Surface Models (DSM) with nearly laser-scanning quality. 09 December 2016 - Prof. Dr. Irena Hajnsek, DLR Mircowaves and Radar Institute and up to now Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, has been appointed Full Professor of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing at ETH Zurich. Irena Hajnsek is one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of remote sensing using radar waves and in the application of satellite radar data. A key focus of her work is the development of bio/geophysical inversion models for determining environmental parameters such as soil moisture from multi-parametric SAR data. Her results contribute significantly to improving global environmental monitoring and forecasting harvests and food security. 16 June 2016 - We may announce that PD Dr. Andreas Reigber has been appointed Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin for remote sensing and digital image processing. The University recognizes therewith his outstanding achievements in research and teaching in this field. Dr. Reigber is already giving lectures at TU Berlin since 2002 about photogrammetry and radar. 03 May 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Astor Torano Caicoya successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Allometric Estimation of Aboveground Forest Biomass using Forest Structure Parameters estimated by means of Multi-Baseline SAR Measurements" at the Chair of Forest Growth and Yield Science of the Technical University Munich (TUM) already on Friday, 29 April 2016. In his thesis he addressed the estimation of forest biomass using allometric techniques based on forest structure parameters estimated by SAR. Astor performed his presentation as well as the questions round in a very convincing and settled way. 25 January 2016 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Florian Kugler successfully defended his thesis entitled "Pol-InSAR Forest Height Estimation at Different Frequencies: Opportunities and Limitations" at the Chair of Forest Growth and Yield Science of the Technical University Munich (TUM) already on 22 December 2015. Florian's work was essential in understanding and solving many problems and open issues on quantitative forest height estimation from several acquisition configurations and sensors. In a convincing discussion Florian mastered SAR and forestry questions with the same virtue. This was the last "Chapter" of PhD work that ended with a well deserved Doctor rer. silv. title ... and probably the best X-mas present ever! 24 November 2015 - The IEEE Board of Directors, at its November 2015 meeting, has elevated Dr. Andreas Reigber to "IEEE Fellow", the highest grade of membership in the IEEE. 23 March 2015 - Dear all, we are happy to annoumce that Mariantonietta Zonno is now (approx. two weeks ago) Dr. Mariantonietta Zonno. Mariantonietta did her Ph.D. at the Politecnico de Bari. The title of her thesis is “SAR Images Processing: Advancements in GB-SAR Data Focusing and InSAR Applications”. This research includes her work with Francesco De Zan on the lack of phase consistency in interferometric stacks (triplets) during her stay as a visiting scientist at our Institute last year. DLR Recognition as Center of Excellence in “Spaceborne Radar Remote Sensing”

20 October 2014 - The DLR executive board recently awarded the Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR) together with IMF and DFD the title “DLR Center of Excellence” concerning “Spaceborne Radar Remote Sensing”. This recognizes our world-wide acknowledged end-to-end system expertise in radar remote sensing, starting from conception and specification of new SAR sensors and missions, with development of new technologies and algorithms up to data processing and application of data products in earth science and safety responsibilities. The Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR) is carrying this title together with IMF and DFD from 2001. It has now been extended until end of 2015.

29 July 2014 - We are happy to announce that our colleagues Benjamin Bräutigam and Stefan Baumgartner successfully defended their doctoral theses yesterday at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Despite the heat, both kept cool head and with their clearly structured and very professionally performed final presentations they not only convinced their peers but also inspired all present colleagues. The topics of the dissertations are: Benjamin Bräutigam: „Instrument Calibration of Spaceborne SAR Systems“ and Stefan Baumgartner: „Air- and Spaceborne Traffic Monitoring with Synthetic Aperture Radar“. Assignment to Quality Manager of the Institute - Martin Maier

7 May 2014 - Martin Maier has been assigned to Quality Manager of the Institute by Britta Schade, Quality Manager of DLR, and Alberto Moreira, Institute Director of HR. Martin Maier is following Karl-Heinz Bethke on its post of Quality Manager of the Institute who introduced a quality management system at HR. Martin Maier has now constructed the quality management at HR in a way such that we will be able to approach the DLR intern quality audit according to ISO 9001 by the and of July 2014.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Sigurd Huber

26 February 2014 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Sigurd Huber defended his PhD yesterday at the faculty of Electrical Engineering of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with great success. His clearly structured and professional presentation not only inspired his peers but also all present colleagues.

The title of his dissertation is "Spaceborne SAR Systems with Digital Beamforming and Reflector Antennas". Sigurd Huber works in Marwan Younis' group and developed and optimized a promising novel SAR concept that combines the advantages of large reflector antennas (narrow antenna beam/high gain) and digital phased arrays (high flexibility while forming antenna diagrams via digital beamforming).

An important contribution of his work is the development of optimized techniques for the combination of feed signals in real-time. On one hand, by using these new techniques the gain of received echoes can be maximized and on the other hand the contribution of ambiguities can be minimized. Another substantial contribution is the development of a reflector with two different focal levels which simultaneously distributes the power of an incoming plane wave to several feed elements. This leads in combination with the digital signal processing to a balanced performance for different incidence angles on the one hand and to a significant reduction of possible performance losses after fail of a feed element on the other hand. Sigurd's developments, hence, will play a critical role during the development of a high-performance SAR instrument for the Tandem-L mission. Dear Sigurd well done, congratulations!

07 February 2014 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Eric Schreiber successfully defended his PhD yesterday at Karlsruhe University (KIT). He could convince his peers regarding his novel, fully electronic microwave imaging system. We would like to use the opportunity to say thank you for this extraordinary work he has achieved here since being with us. Furthermore, we congratulate him to this achievment and wish him a maximum of success for his future work. Eric will stay with us, in the TIRAMISU project but also in other activities. As last year, the final of this year's DLR_Science_Slam took place at the evening event of DLR's annual general assembly, held yesterday on 05 December 2013 in Göttingen and DLR colleagues could join the event via a live video broadcast. Two teams reached the final: TEAM SOLAR: Christoph Prahl and Christoph Hilgert (Institute for Solar Research, Almeria in Spain) and TEAM REMOTE SENSING: Michele Martone, Maria Tello Alonso (both Microwaves and Radarinstitute, Oberpfaffenhofen), Daniele Cerra, Claas Hendrik Grohnfeldt, Aliaksei Makarau, Kevin Alonso Gonzalez (each Remote Sensing Technology Institute, Oberpfaffenhofen). The voting of a jury, the hall audience and those connected via internet and mobil phones after both presentations resulted in a "The winner is: TEAM REMOTE SENSING!!!" Elevation to IEEE Fellow - Irena Hajnsek and Kostas Papathanassiou

28 November 2013 - It is our great pleasure to announce that the IEEE Board of Directors, at its November 2013 meeting, elevated Irena Hajnsek and Kostas Papathanassiou to "IEEE Fellow", effective, 1 January 2014, with the following citations: „for contributions to synthetic aperture radar imaging using airborne sensors and spaceborne missions“ and „for contributions to polarimetric interferometry for synthetic aperture radar“, respectively. Within the next two months, they will receive their IEEE Fellow pin and certificate. Both serve as visible recognition of his elevation to the highest grade of membership in the IEEE. 29 July 2013 - Our colleague Octavio Ponce has been granted a Student Paper Award at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Melbourne, Australia, for his work entitled “First Demonstration of 3-D Holographic Tomography with Fully Polarimetric Multi-Circular SAR at L-band”. "DLR Science Award" in recognition of scientific achievements - Pau Prats

19 September 2012 - Pau Prats, head of the Multimodal Processing Group of the Institute, has been awarded with the DLR Science Award (DLR-Wissenschaftspreis). This Prize is awarded every year primarily to young scientists at DLR in honor of their outstanding scientific achievements which must be documented in refereed scientific journals. The awarded work of Pau Prats is entitled: “Processing of Sliding Spotlight and TOPS SAR Data Using Baseband Azimuth Scaling”, published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 48, No. 2, February 2010. Congratulations to Pau Prats! The award will be presented during the DLR General Assembly Meeting, beginning of December in Cologne.

Novel radar satellite technology nominated for the German Award for Technology and Innovation (Deutscher Zukunftspreis)

12 September 2012 - Scientists of the Microwaves and Radar Institute with their project "Radar Eyes in Space - Revolutionary Technology for Earth and Environment" are nominated for the German Future Award "Deutscher Zukunftspreis". This award of the German president for Technology and Innovation is presented every year to scientist and developers whose innovations lead to application-oriented and herewith marketable products. The prestigious award will be presented by the German president Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck, end of November in Berlin.

IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award 2012 goes to 7 scientists of the Microwave and Radar Institute

23 July 2011 - The IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award has been handed over today, on 23 July 2012, to seven scientists of our institute during the Plenary Session on IGRASS 2012 in Munich. The IEEE W.R.G. Baker Award is presented by the IEEE Board of Directors for a most outstanding professional article published in an IEEE publication reporting original work. No more than one award may be given in any year. The award will be presented in 2012 for the first time since 2002. The prized paper is entitled „TanDEM-X: A Satellite Formation for High-Resolution SAR Interferometry” published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 45, Issue 11, Nov. 2007, co-authored by Dr. Gerhard Krieger, Prof. Alberto Moreira, Dr. Hauke Fiedler, Prof. Irena Hajnsek, Marian Werner, Dr. Marwan Younis and Dr. Manfred Zink.

Certificate of Recognition of TanDEM-X Achievements and Impact to all the TanDEM-X Team

30 April 2012 - A satellite mission has been awarded for the first time during the EUSAR 2012 conference in Nuremburg, Germany: The TanDEM-X mission received a "Certificate of Recognition of TanDEM-X Achievements and Impact". A percentage of 30% of all EUSAR 2012 contributions referred to TanDEM-X and all TanDEM-X presentations have been presented excellently at the conference. The award was handed over to Dr. Manfred Zink who received it representing the whole TanDEM-X team at DLR and in the industry. Congratulations to all the TanDEM-X team!

ARGUS-Preis 2011 - Christopher Hepner

19 October 2011 - Mr. Christopher Hepner has been awarded this year's ARGUS-Preis granted by EADS-Cassidian. His master's thesis "Preparation of 3-D Radar Signatures from Tower Turntable Measurements with Sparse Aperture" done in Research Group Microwave Sensors was sucessfully defended at Prof. Münzner, Hochschule Ulm. The Award will be presented to him on 20 October 2011. For this, he will give a talk at EADS Ulm. We congratulate Christopher to this success and would like to thank him again for this extraordinary work.

DLR Research Semester - Josef Mittermayer

19 September 2011 - Recognizing his outstanding research achievements and for the promotion of further studies, Dr.-Ing. Josef Mittermayer, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been grated a "DLR Research Semester" by the DLR Executive Board. The DLR Research Semester allows DLR scientists conducting their studies for one semester at a research institution abroad. Josef has been informed about this award decision in a personal letter already in May this year.

Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) Award - Astor Torano Caicoya

12 August 2011 - We are glad to announce that Astor Torano Caicoya received the Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) Award donated by the Audi Foundation for Environment "Audi Stiftung für Umwelt". The SRM Award has been issued by the Audi Foundation for Environment in 2010 for promoting great achievements in the field of sustainable resource management. It honours graduates in course Sustainable Resource Management of Technische Universität München (TUM) with great achievements. Astor finished his master thesis in the Pol-InSAR Group and is working towards his doctoral thesis since 2010 with the goal to derive innovative forest biomass algorithms based on the 3D forest structure and on Pol-InSAR techniques. Astor's work poses a bridge-building function between the complex nature and new technologies and is a basic contribution to the aimed Tandem-L mission goal. 05 August 2011 - Recognizing his outstanding research achievements and for the promotion of further studies, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. 14 March 2011 - We are proud to announce that our PhD student Esteban Aguilera won the "Young Scientist Award" for his presentation last week at the URSI Symposium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen! Herr Aguilera is DAAD awardee. He is with us since more than one year now. His doctoral thesis is, mainly, about polarimetric SAR tomography. 22 November 2010 - We are glad to announce that Thomas Oberwallner who worked for 3 years half-and-half here at DLR, Microwaves and Radar Institute, Department of Reconnaissance and Security, Group Signatures and also at the Dual Academy Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) in Mannheim, Germany, finished his Bachelor degree as Best in his course on 19 November 2010. He has been honored in front of an audience of 6000 attendees, also DLR as the education facility has been valued in this context.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Esra Erten

17 November 2010 - Yesterday, our former colleague Esra Erten defended her thesis entitled "Information theory of multi-temporal SAR systems with application to motion detection and change detection" at the Technische Universität Berlin with great success. Her work was supported by DAAD and took place half-and-half at TU Berlin and DLR Oberpfaffenhofen. Esra will further serve science and especially the SAR field: She will have a postdoc position at ETH Zurich, chair of Prof. Irena Hajnsek. We wish great success for the future and hope to see more thrilling scientific results from her.

"Phillip-Matthäus-Hahn-Stiftung" Award - Bastian Calaminus

02. November 2010 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Herr Bastian Calaminus, Group System Engineering, Department Reconnaissance and Security, finished his Master course in „Systems Engineering“ at the Gratuate School of Albstadt-Sigmaringen with certificate "Best of the Year". He has been granted thus with the "Phillip-Matthäus-Hahn-Stiftung" award. We congratulate him very much to this award and his very successfull Masters degree.

Best Paper Award - Matteo Nannini and Ralf Horn

We are glad to accounce that Matteo Nannini and Ralf Horn recently received the Best Paper Prize at the 7th Joint SEAS & EMRS DTC Technical Conference 2010 in Edinburgh. The title is: Nick Walker, Ralf Horn, Armando Marino, Matteo Nannini, Ian Woodhouse: "The SARTOM Project: Tomography and polarimetry for enhanced target detection for foliage penetrating airborne P-band and L-band SAR".

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Koichi Iribe

Since today, 19 August 2010, Koichi Iribe is Dr. Koichi Iribe. We are very happy to let you know that Koichi Iribe successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Tohoku University, in Sendai, Japan. Koichi spend two years in our institute working in the Pol-InSAR group on the Detection and Application of Coherent Scatterers. Since August 2009 he is back in Japan writing up his thesis on "Investigation on Coherent Scatterers in Natural Environment for SAR Multi-Image Applications" that finally defended with success today (19 August 2010). We congratulate and wish him all the best for his future.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. with "summa cum laude" - Jayanti J. Sharma

We are very happy to inform you that Jayanti J. Sharma successfully defended yesterday, 12 August 2010, her PhD with distinction at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Fakultät for Elektrotechnik und Informationtechnik. She was working the last four years at the Pol-InSAR research group on the thesis entitled "Estimation of Glacier Ice Extinction Coefficient using Long-wavelength Polarimetric Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar". We like to congratulate her for this achievement and wish her a successful continuation of her research career.

First Place Student Award, EUSAR 2010 - Jayanti J. Sharma

We are glad to announce that Jayanti J. Sharma was awarded the „Best Student Paper Award“ at EUSAR 2010. The award certificate reads as "First Place Student Award" to Jayanti J. Sharma "For a very significant contribution to the field of Synthetic Aperture Radar entitled": "Long-wavelength Pol-InSAR for glacier ice extinction estimation" co-authored with Irena Hajnsek and Konstantinos Papathanassiou. Best Master Degree Thesis Prize, 2010 IEEE Gold Remote Sensing Conference - Anna Fontana

We are very happy to inform you that Anna Fontana was awarded with the prize for the best Master Degree thesis on remote sensing topics discussed in Italy in 2009 during the IEEE GOLD Remote Sensing Conference, held 29/30 April 2010 in Livorno, Italy. This is a national prize awarded every year by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter. Anna performed her master thesis on forest structure estimation in our institute within the PolInSAR group in 2009 and defended the thesis successful in December 2009 at the University of Napoli. She was supervised by Seung-Kuk Lee and Kostas Papathanassiou.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Alberto Di Maria

28 April 2010 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Alberto Di Maria defended his thesis today on 28 April 2010 at the University of Siena, Italy, Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (Information Engineering department). His work is entitled "Fast Numerical Techniques for the Design of Planar and Quasiplanar Arrays". We congratulate him very much to this milestone in his career.

Dipl.-Ing. Christian Beine, fomerly with the Microwaves and Radar Institute, received a doctor's degree "Dr.-Ing." on 11 November 2009 with his thesis „Theoretische und experimentelle Untersuchungen zu einem vollpolarimetrischen, breitbandigen Mehrfrequenz-Radarsystem mit synthetischer Apertur für komplexe Szenarien“ from the Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum.

Dipl.-Ing. Matteo Nannini, Microwaves and Radar Institute, received a doctor's degree "Dr.-Ing." on 15 December 2009 from the University Karlsruhe with his dissertation about „Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar Tomography: Processing Algorithms and Constellation Design”.
