Graphical representation of the Sunrise solar telescope inside the gondola. The solar observatory is carried by a giant balloon, which expands to a diameter of about 100 metres in Earth's upper atmosphere.
The helium balloon is carrying a total load of almost three tonnes and ascends to a height of more than 30 kilometres. The solar telescope is observing the movement and magnetic orientation of fine structures in the hot plasma of the Sun’s atmosphere for the first time.

The gondola consists of a light strut construction.
The instrument platform contains the SUFI filter imager and IMaX magnetograph. Both use the light from the telescope to measure the sun's magnetic fields.
The secondary mirror reflects the sunlight back into the telescope. The main mirror is further back and cannot be seen from this angle.
Corrugated cardboard structures help to cushion the impact on landing.

The two sets of solar panels supply SUNRISE with energy.
