ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter at the launch of EuroMir 95. From September 1995 until February 1996, he lived and worked for 179 days in space onboard the Russian space station Mir. During the mission, he carried out a total of 40 scientific experiments. He twice left the station for 'space walks', or EVA (extravehicular activity), to conduct work outside the station.
