Even today, development of the steam generator system is an important component of work at Lampoldshausen. It has been a central task of DLR Lampoldshausen since the Sixties, because it is the basis of the generation of a vacuum in the simulation of high-altitude conditions and this vacuum must be maintained while the engines are running.
The steam generators drive the ejectors, which force the exhaust gases out of the test chamber while the rocket engine is running. The end of the ELDO programme was a setback for the steam generator development programme as well. It was only with the Ariane programme that steam generation became a priority once again.
