Navigation and positioning systems have long been part of our daily lives: whether as part of air, rail, maritime or road transport systems, they are key elements in networking transport sectors and are also used in many other sectors of the economy. Navigation systems provide a highly accurate positioning service for synchronising computer networks, mobile phone networks and power plants for energy providers. With the European satellite navigation system Galileo, Europe is creating an independent and civilian alternative to the US-American GPS and Russian Glonass systems. Galileo offers high quality, integrity and strengthens European sovereignty. It contributes to greater efficiency, sustainability and security.
