Sustainable hydrogen mobility for road and rail

Green hydrogen in mobility is a sustainable alternative where petrol or diesel are used today. At the same time, it offers the familiar convenience of long ranges and fast refueling. Fuel cells are also highly efficient and produce no emissions other than water vapor. The Institute of Vehicle Concepts is active in all areas of hydrogen applications in mobility, from bicycles and cars to trains.

Hydrogen components and technologies

The Institute develops both special fuel cells and new types of hydrogen tanks for mobile use and integrates them into the respective overall systems.

  • Electrolysis
    • On-site electrolysis, operating processes, demand and economic scenarios
  • Filling station
    • Interface filling station to vehicle, automatic refueling, (operating processes), intermodal applications, architecture
  • Vehicle and vehicle components
    • Design of drive, fuel cell, combustion engine, tank, cryo-cooled electric motor, design of additional units incl. air conditioning, cooling, modelling, simulation, optimization, operating processes, validation, approval
  • Sector coupling
    • Transportation, housing, industry, operating processes

Application examples

Hydrogen methods and tools

The institute's equipment enables research into complex, technology-intensive tasks

  • Mandatory contributions to the verification of research solutions in the transport program
  • Establishment and consolidation of unique selling points in the development and application of new testing methods
  • Accompanying complex technology topics with testing tasks in the customer relationship
