CARA simulation cluster in Dresden

CARA simulation cluster in Dresden

For component simulation and complete vehicle crash calculations, the institute utilises several nodes of the DLR large-scale cluster CARA in Dresden. With its help, various complete vehicle crash calculations can be carried out simultaneously within a few hours. By sharing the cluster with other institutes, the load peaks of the individual institutes can be equalised and additional computing power can be made available if required. The software used by FK is LS-Dyna from ANSYS (formerly LSTC) and VPS - VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE SOLUTION (formerly PAMcrash) from esi.

Simulation server static optimisations

Simulation server static optimisations

In the area of static optimisations, wall thickness and topology optimisations of large components are carried out on the server, for example of complete rail vehicle bodies. These large models require a lot of RAM and are paired with a large number of load cases, which can be calculated in just a few hours thanks to parallelisation. The software used for this is Optistruct from Altair and Nastran from HEXAGON (formerly MSC). Specially developed software is also used for automatic CAE processes on the server.

Simulation server for dynamic optimisations

Simulation server for dynamic optimisations

The Institute uses the calculation server to set up and calculate local process chains with integrated explicit simulations and to train neural networks. Due to its number of processors, the server can be used to carry out crash calculations from components to complete vehicle simulations and test them locally before transferring them to the DLR large-scale cluster. The server is also used for automated material map derivation for crash simulation. The main software used for this is LS Dyna, VPS and Carmaker.
