The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems in the new issue of Spektrum der Wissenschaft

  • The magazine Spektrum der Wissenschaft focuses on the decarbonisation of shipping and alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
  • The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems is highlighted as an important player researching optimised propulsion systems and the use of alternative fuels for maritime transport systems.
  • Steffen Brötje, research associate at the institute, emphasises the importance of innovations for the climate-friendly transformation of shipping.

The current issue of the renowned magazine Spektrum der Wissenschaft is dedicated to an urgent topic of global climate policy: the decarbonisation of shipping. Under the title "Where are the big ocean giants?", author Ralf Nestler sheds light on the alternative fuels that are being researched and trialled for use in shipping in order to achieve climate-neutral shipping by 2050.

The article emphasises the assessment of the DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems in Kiel and Geesthacht. Steffen Brötje, research associate at the institute, comments on the developments in research in this area, including with regard to optimised propulsion systems, which have great potential for saving greenhouse gases, in addition to the use of alternative fuels. This is what the institute is researching.

With its innovative approaches and close cooperation with the maritime industry, the DLR Institute is an important driving force for the future of shipping.
