Communication and Ground Stations Department

Spacecraft operations require the transmission and reception of data signals from and to the spacecraft. This service is provided by an operational ground data transfer system which is part of the department "Communication and Ground Stations".

The main tasks of the area data transfer include:

  • Operation of the Ground Segment including:
    • Antenna Facilities
    • Communication Systems
    • Control Center Systems
  • Reception/Transmission of:
    • Telemetry
    • Commands
    • Tracking Data
  • Operation of the GSOC Ground Station at Weilheim, 35 km south-west of Oberpfaffenhofen. This antenna complex has the capability of tracking the spacecraft and exchanging data with four S-band antennas and one Ku-band antenna.

Additional tasks and projects include upgrading, maintenance, configuration and operation of the antennas. Planning and implementation of communication interfaces to external ground stations and planning, implementation and operation of a global network for the transmission of video/audio signals and miscellaneous data.
