FSLP stands for "First Spacelab Payload". It was the first international flight of the Spacelab performed in 1983. FSLP was a multi-disciplinary mission covering the fields of materials and life science as well as earth observation, atmospheric physics, and technology.

GSOC acted as Remote User Center for the European material scientists. It could successfully fulfill its function as remote Payload Operations Control Center (POCC). The European scientists were supported at preparation and execution in collaboration with ESA by the following tasks:

  • Requirements management, Documentation for data processing, operations procedures and other procedures
  • Design of working schedule for the European payload
  • Support of the Astronaut Training for handling the payload
  • Allocation of astronauts at the SL-1 POCC at Johnson Space Center (JSC)
  • Consultanc of scientist during payload preparation and execution
  • Selection of data at the NASA/JSC for the german scientific institutes and data transfer to the German Space Operations Center (GSOC)
  • Handling and preparation of the transferred data for the scientists at GSOC.
