From data collection to transport planning

- The DLR Institute of Transport Research took part in Girls’ Day 2026 at the DLR_School_Lab Berlin-Adlershof.
- The schoolgirls gained an insight into the work of our female scientists, learnt how to become a transport researcher and were able to put their ideas into practice in a 3D environment.
- Girls’ Day, which takes place once a year, was launched more than 20 years ago to inspire girls and women to take an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
On 23 April 2026, a group of schoolgirls visited the DLR in Berlin-Adlershof to learn more about our work as part of Girls’ Day. The DLR Institute of Transport Research was part of the day and offered a view behind the curtain.
As part of a varied programme covering topics from across the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), our colleagues shared their stories of how they came to work in transport research and demonstrated just how diverse the world of science is.
This year, the girls were able to gain an insight into the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, and how this is used in transport research to find out how and why people travel and, for example, what expectations they have of transport services.
They were also able to take on the role of planners themselves and, using 3D software, redesign a neighbourhood around a school to suit their own preferences. Their designs were then compared with the current state of the area and evaluated together with the pupils to assess their potential impact.
We would like to thank all our colleagues involved, the DLR_School_Lab and, in particular, our visitors for an inspiring day!
