Earth observation based products for climate adaptation and environment
The Center for Earth observation based information for climate adaptation and environment (ZKU) – which is currently being set up – will provide Germany-wide Earth observation products tailored to the needs of public authorities in Germany.
The datasets of ZKU leverage Earth observation data (mainly satellite and airborne data) and further geodata. The application fields of these datasets cover a wide range of topics including cities and settlements, energy infrastructure, forest ecosystems and forestry, agriculture, biodiversity, coasts and rivers, snow, and air quality.
The methods, algorithms, and datasets underlying the ZKU’s geoinformation products have often been developed in the context of research projects. These are updated within ZKU, further adapted to the needs of authorities, and thus made available for sustainable use.
The utilized techniques specifically comprise machine learning, artificial intelligence, physical and statistical modelling, and advanced methods for the analysis and interpretation of long time series.
The data and information products will be provided through a web-based data portal, wherever possible under a free and open data policy. The ZKU portal will provide user-friendly access to data and metadata, specifically tailored to the requirements of public authorities, and will support the easy search, visualization, and further processing of information.
