Traffic management during major events and disasters

VABENE is an interdisciplinary project, in which traffic engineers, computer scientists , mathematicians, geographers, physicists, geodesists and urban planers from 8 DLR Institutes work together to realize a new traffic management system for mass events and disasters.

At the Munich “Oktoberfest” VABENE is e.g. supporting the Munich Traffic Coordination Agency to improve the incoming and outgoing Oktoberfest-traffic. The quantitative monitoring of large crowds is also being developed within the project. With the 3K-Camerasytem of the EOC (48 MPix) crowds can be quantitatively monitored within a very short time span. People density, amount and moving directions are evaluated automatically from image sequences. This technique shall be used in future for mass events and could help, by using the information about size and density of large crowds, to avoid disasters during these events.
