Neustrelitz

DLR site Neustrelitz

Antennas have been receiving signals in Neustrelitz for more than 100 years. Satellite-related research began here with the establishment of the experimental radio station of the Kaiserliches Telegraphenversuchsamt in 1913. Today, approximately 110 employees work and conduct research here in the fields of space weather, satellite data reception, satellite remote sensing, navigation and maritime transport and safety.

At DLR's Neustrelitz site, research and development focuses on satellite data reception, satellite remote sensing, navigation, space weather, as well as maritime transport and safety. Researchers work at the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD), the Remote Sensing Technology Institute, the Institute of Communications and Navigation and the Institute for Solar-Terrestrial Physics.

The German Remote Sensing Data Center receives and processes data from international Earth observation satellites and makes it available to research, industry and the public. The Remote Sensing Technology Institute develops and tests methods and software processes to systematically extract relevant geoscientific information from remote sensing data. Both institutes are part of the Earth Observation Center (EOC) – Germany's competence centre for Earth observation.

The Institute of Communications and Navigation researches theoretical foundations, methods and systems for wireless communication, navigation and positioning in space and on Earth. At the Institute for Solar-Terrestrial Physics, research focuses on the physical processes of space weather and their influence on processes in Earth's atmosphere.

As part of its dedicated efforts to promote young talent, DLR also operates the DLR_School_Lab Neustrelitz on site. As in all DLR_School_Labs, exciting hands-on experiments are used to convey physics knowledge while sparking an interest in science and technology.
