The German Aerospace Center ( DLR) is addressing the challenges posed by the digital transformation. As part of the new cross-sectoral area of digitalisation, DLR is developing tools for aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security that will enable Germany to play an active role in shaping the digital future.

The digitalisation of the economy and society is a topic of vital importance for the future viability of Germany and Europe. Digital technologies offer considerable innovation potential and can have a transformative influence on existing value creation processes and even drive completely new business models. Digitalisation enables more efficient processes and allows new forms of collaboration and communication.

Research infrastructure

Establishing and operating large-scale research facilities is one of DLR's statutory tasks. They form the backbone of research in space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The facilities are used across institutes and programmes at DLR and made available to partner organisations from science and industry.

Quantum technologies

Where classical technologies reach their limits, quantum technologies open up new possibilities for research, industry and business. New sensors, simulators, communication networks and computers with previously unattainable performance are made possible through the harnessing of quantum mechanical effects.

'Artificial intelligence' (AI) is an umbrella term used to describe various computer science methods that can be used to automate sub-processes of human thought. DLR has been working on developing AI methods for more and more fields of application over many years.

CausalAnomalies

Anomaly detection is essential for several areas of application at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR). Anomaly detection plays a crucial role, for example, when monitoring satellite telemetry or analysing Earth observation data from satellites and climate models.

ProTekT

To fulfil society's demand for climate-friendly mobility solutions, a wide range of areas must be reconciled. The environmentally and economically sustainable transport systems of the future are therefore being developed in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary environment.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important future technologies for digitalisation. AI already plays a central role in many areas for DLR and related industries. As an enabling technology, the topic also has great innovation potential in research, development and management.

Cyber-physical engineering

Cyber-physical engineering focuses on topics such as the simulation of complex processes, digital twins and virtual certification. DLR has extensive experience with the interface between digital and physical engineering.

For the digital transformation – to implement DLR's digitisation strategy, 11 interdisciplinary projects are currently underway with the goal of digital sovereignty in science, business and society. The project spans all DLR research topics, from the exploitation of data troves, through to solutions for intelligent energy management or visualisations in the aerospace sector.

Institutes and facilities

From Aachen to Zittau and from Stade to Weilheim, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is represented by its institutes and facilities at 30 locations across Germany. One of the latest waves of establishments took place in several steps starting in 2017 with a total of 15 new institutes. Thematically, they complement the existing institutes and, in cooperation with them, are dedicated to the future topics of relevance to society – from green energy and new forms of mobility to artificial intelligence and quantum computing, to name a few.

The construction and operation of large-scale research facilities is a statutory task of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The facilities, as well as the research aircraft and helicopters, enable DLR to carry out its research in aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The research infrastructure is used across institutes and programmes. National and international partners from research and industry can benefit from DLR's infrastructure and know-how.

Digitalisation research areas

Research on digitalisation provides stimuli for the economy, helps shape innovative technologies, methods and processes in an application-oriented manner and uses these for research and science management. The research areas work together in a supportive manner. Artificial intelligence methods and tools are important enablers for the analysis of large amounts of data as well as for autonomous systems and digital design processes. Data management, in turn, is the core basis for handling the ever-increasing amounts of data that arise in connection with digital engineering.
