DLR site Berlin

Space and transport are the main research areas at DLR's Berlin-Adlershof site. The Institute of Space Research is involved in major missions for Earth observation and the exploration of our Solar System and the study of exoplanets. In the field of transport, researchers are focussing on mobility concepts for the future.

Founded in 1992, the Berlin site of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) centres its research activities on space and transport.

Based in the German capital, the DLR Institute of Space Research is a world-leading centre for optical sensor systems and their application in planetary research, Earth observation and security. Its work expands humanity's understanding of the origin and evolution of planetary systems and helps to find solutions for protecting life on Earth. The Institute of Space Research was established through the merger of the DLR Institutes of Optical Sensor Systems and Planetary Research. It plays a key role in implementing the German Space Strategy and contributing to the science and exploration programmes of the European Space Agency (ESA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other international space organisations.

The Institutes of Transport Research, Transportation Systems and Vehicle Concepts also conduct research in Berlin-Adlershof. In laying the foundations for an environmentally and socially compatible transport system and its management, researchers primarily focus on intermodal concepts and the use of cutting-edge transport technologies. Their objective is always to make the mobility of tomorrow as safe, efficient and sustainable as possible.

At the DLR_School_Lab Berlin, school pupils are introduced to the site's space and transport research in an age-appropriate manner.
