Along with wind tunnel tests and trial flights, numerical simulation has become a powerful tool of aviation research. Scientists foresee that this technology, combined with continuously increasing computer performance, will in the future make it possible for a “virtual airplane” to make its maiden flight on the computer and be designed and certified digitally, and consequently at minimal cost and risk.
