October 7, 2022; Since last week, the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines have dominated the headlines in the Baltic Sea region. According to initial estimates, between 100 and 500 kilotons of methane have been released into the sea within a few days. It is still unclear what proportion of the methane remains in the ocean and how much has escaped into the atmosphere.
