AVHRR4CDR
The ESA AVHRR4CDR project uses the newly harmonized ESA 1-km AVHRR Level-1C FDR dataset to develop consistent climate data series (CDRs) for the period prior to 2000. The goal is to extend the CCI climate data series to cover the entire pre-Metop period (1978–2007). Four prototype CDRs are being created using all available spectral channels: Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), snow cover, land surface temperature (LST), and land-use change. A key focus is on the detailed characterization of uncertainties as well as validation against independent reference data to ensure high quality and stability of the time series. The spatial coverage initially encompasses Europe, supplemented by selected regions in various climate zones.
The DFD is coordinating the project and building on the long-standing experience of the TIMELINE project to make a valuable contribution to the CCI time series. Partners in the project include the companies Brockmann Consult, ENVEO, and Gisat, as well as the Universities of Louvain and Valencia. In addition, an AVHRR expert community is being established as part of the project to pool knowledge and best practices and to develop a roadmap for further data retrieval.
