                  Research Topics

The research topics of the Mechanics and Thermal Systems department are:

                  Structures and Mechanisms

The development of structures and mechanisms for space vehicles and components has already been comprehensively supervised by the MTS department in many projects.

                  Deployable Structures

Deployable structures are structures that can change their shape and size (automatically) from a compact configuration to a large, open configuration. They could be described as structures capable of being unfolded, disassembled, unwound or even separated, which gives an insight into the diversity of these structures and what is meant by the term 'deployable'.

                  Thermal Control Systems

The temperature of the Solar System varies between the -270 degrees Celsius of background radiation in space to the +5500 degrees Celsius on the surface of the Sun. The thermal control system enables a spacecraft to work, without any problems, under these conditions. Instruments, interfaces, structures and fluids must not fall below their minimum or exceed their maximum temperature when in use.

                  Degradation

The Mechanical and Thermal Systems department works both in the field of materials research and radiation analysis. The materials used by the space industry can be tested under space-like conditions in the Complex Irradiation Facility (CIF).
