KNIMS: Competence network for immobilisation-related muscle disorders
Our aim
Humans have evolved as a physically active species within the Earth’s gravitational field, why our bodies require a minimum level of muscle contraction and mechanical stress. Consequently, a lack of muscular activity below critical levels leads to deconditioning, a loss of physical function, and ultimately to frailty and a loss of autonomy. As these health problems – and in particular the loss of autonomy – pose major challenges for both individuals and society, KNIMS researchers aim to identify the mechanisms underlying immobilisation-related muscle disorders.
The aim is to develop and implement improved, evidence-based and increasingly personalised interventions to address such muscle disorders in various settings and among different patient groups.
