AEROS

AEROS was the first aeronomic mission, navigation in extreme low earth orbits. The scientific goal was the global measurement of the ionospheric-plasma and its dependency on the altitude, geographical reference locations, as well as daytime and change of the season dependencies. Electron and ion densities, ion- and neutral-gas-temperatures, chemical composition and the dependency from the solar UV-radiation was measured in the regions between 400 km and 150 km.

  • AEROS 1 (16. December 1972 - 22. August, 1973)
  • AEROS 2 (16. July 1974 - 25. September 1975)

Both satellites were operated and controlled by GSOC involving a world-wide station-network. The missions were terminated as planned by re-entry of the satellites.
