E-cargo bikes in the service sector

Cargo bikes in municipal companies
Stadtreinigung Hamburg uses cargo bikes in various areas as part of the campaign.

Possible uses of cargo bikes in municipal companies

The TrasHH research project is investigating the potential use of electrically assisted cargo bikes for public organisations and service providers using the example of Stadtreinigung Hamburg (SRH). Based on the knowledge gained, the project will determine the conditions under which the use of electric cargo bikes by municipal organisations instead of light commercial vehicles with conventional combustion engines is possible and sensible. In addition, it will be analysed how users can be motivated to use electric cargo bikes in their everyday work. With the help of the MovingLab, the movements of the cargo bikes and additional information on the work carried out will be recorded.

The aim of the project is to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles in the service sector and to formulate recommendations for municipal companies on the use of e-cargo bikes.

Realisation

Participants use the app for commercial journeys with the e-cargo bike. Participant interviews are conducted at the start of the project. During the project, questions about the use of the e-cargo bikes are collected via the MovingLab app.

  • Items transported
  • Battery charge status
  • Number of customer contacts
  • Activities that could not be carried out with the cargo bike
  • Agreements with the drivers of light commercial vehicles, for example to hand over bin bags
  • Satisfaction with the use of the cargo bike

Stadtreinigung Hamburg uses the seven cargo bikes in various areas, such as cleaning green spaces or streets and pavements. A total of six different cargo bike models are in use.

Results

To date, there have been few reliable statements on the successful economic use of electric cargo bikes in municipal companies. The findings from TrasHH offer municipal cleaning companies and comparable municipal companies the first real key figures on economic efficiency, environmental effects and employee satisfaction. The high visibility of cargo bike use at SRH also serves as a model for companies in the private sector to promote the reorganisation of commercial fleets in the direction of smaller electric vehicle concepts.
