                        About us

                        Our institute supports DLR's mission by providing new, multifunctional lightweight structures for aerospace, security, ground-based transport, wind energy and through its overall design expertise for aircraft and spacecraft structures and wind energy rotor blades. Research is being conducted into new composite materials across scales and life cycles, new calculation, design and production processes and methods of functional integration.

                        The Institute

                        The DLR Institute of Lightweight Systems develops and tests new lightweight construction technologies for resource-saving and climate-friendly structures in the aerospace, transport, energy and security sectors.

                        Departments

                        With its specialist departments, the institute is orientated along the entire process chain for the production of adaptable, efficiently manufactured, tolerant lightweight structures.

                        Business areas

                        In addition to fundamental work in futurology, the institute focusses on six business areas. These are used to carry out large, practice-orientated projects with a cross-departmental and interdisciplinary character
