The Project

In the two-year DLR research project, the safe dropping of relief supplies from UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) is to be tested. To this end, a technology based on artificial intelligence (AI for short) will assess whether the drop site is free of people before the aid delivery is dropped.

The first flight tests were carried out in Magdeburg-Cochstedt at the end of 2021. Test data for the AI was generated by flying over mannequins several times at different altitudes. Optical reconnaissance in real time was also tested during the flight test.

Institute of Optical Sensor Systems

The Institute of Optical Sensor Systems investigates and develops active and passive optical sensor systems for satellites, flying platforms and robotic systems.

Institute of Flight Systems

The Institute of Flight Systems (FT) has been active in the topics of flight mechanics and measurement and system technology of all flying systems at the DLR site Braunschweig since 1953.

Remote Sensing Technology Institute

The DLR Remote Sensing Technology Institute of is located at the sites in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, Berlin-Adlershof and Neustrelitz as well as an office in Bremen. Together with the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) the institute is part of the Earth Observation Center EOC.

National Experimental Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The National Experimental Test Centre for Unmanned Aircraft Systems will serve as a cornerstone for the further development of UAS technologies and thereby play a pioneering part in the enhancement of scientific and economic progress in the field of UAS.
