Research infrastructure

Our philosophy

A central task of the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems is the provision of research and flight test infrastructure for partners from DLR and beyond. In coordination with project partners and users of the test center, the continuous expansion, specification and operation of versatile components takes place.

Research infrastructure at the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems in Cochstedt:

Hangar 1

Project and workshop areas for exclusive and parallel use.

Hangar 2

Project, office and workshop areas in a former aircraft production facility.

Mission control centers

Both mobile and stationary mission control centers are available at the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

6DoF-Motion-Platform

The motion platform makes it possible, for example, to simulate realistic maritime conditions for flight tests by simulating ship deck movements.

Lidar system for wind measurement

The Vaisala Windcube Scan 200s is a pulsed double lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) that enables the determination of the radial wind speed in the targeted volume.Lidar system for wind measurement

Communication and navigation infrastructure

Various communication and navigation infrastructures are available at the National Test Center.

Optical Tracking

An optical tracking system is available at the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. The system consists of two stationary units and a mobile unit, which can be freely positioned.

Fixed-wing UAS as sensor carrier

The Falk is a fixed-wing UAS operated at the test center, which is suitable for flight campaigns with individually scalable sensors and payloads due to its long range.

Flight-Termination-System

Flight termination systems (also known as flight termination systems, or FTS for short) are used to trigger pre-programmed behavior on board an aircraft.

Model city

The model city offers a modular test environment on a reduced scale. It enables researchers to carry out critical tests in a safe environment.
