The new publication "Radlogistik: Grundlagen zu Logistik und Wirtschaftsverkehr mit Lasten- und Transporträdern" is available free of charge from Springer Verlag. The aim of the 425-page book is to provide fundamental insights into the use of cargo and transport bikes in the context of logistics and commercial transport. In view of the pressing challenges of climate protection and the need for sustainable urban development, the book plays a central role in the discussion of current and future mobility solutions.
The potential of bicycle logistics
The book takes up the rapidly developing innovations in the field of e-mobility and focuses in particular on the role of cargo bikes as a competitive alternative to conventional means of transport in urban areas. With contributions from 35 authors from 20 different institutions, it combines scientific findings with practical insights to highlight not only the growing diversity and quality of cargo bikes, but also their potential for sustainable transport and urban development.
This addresses a broad target group, from public planning stakeholders to logistics companies and students, and offers a comprehensive, practice-orientated introduction to the future field of bicycle logistics. It emphasises the need to re-evaluate urban transport concepts and promotes an objective, fact-based discourse on sustainable mobility solutions.
Scientific expertise on the use of cargo bikes
The Institute of Transport Research has contributed its many years of expertise from cargo bike projects such as "Ich entlaste Städte", TRASHH and FCCP to the book.
The fact that I was able to work on this book as part of the six-strong editorial team over the last year and a half shows me how important our research is in this area," says Dr Johannes Gruber. "After all, it is the first work of its kind in the German-speaking world.
Together with his colleagues, he wrote two chapters on the topics of „Gewerblicher Einsatz von Lastenrädern – Vielfalt der Nutzungsmöglichkeiten“ and „Treiber und Hemmnisse der Radlogistik“. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) co-financed the open access publication of the book alongside the five other editors and their organisations.
