Concentrating Solar Systems for the Generation of Heat, Electricity and Fuel

The Institute of Solar Research, headquartered in Cologne, was established by the German Aerospace Centre in 2011 to consolidate the various solar research activities of the Stuttgart-based Institute of Technical Thermodynamics in a single institution.

…

Research and Development

The research and development in the field of concentrating solar technologies provided the basis for the commercial use of this technology. Subject of current research are the improvement of existing processes, materials and components and the development of innovations.

…

Services

The Institute of Solar Research offers international industrial customers of the CSP industry extensive services. Thereby the institute transfers results of its research and development work into the commercial application.

…

Infrastructure

The Institute of Solar Research operates large facilities, test rigs and laboratories at three locations in Germany and has access to the Spanish major research facility Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA), operated by his cooperation partner CIEMAT. This infrastructure providea ideal conditions for solar researchers in basic research and application-oriented projects as well as for the development and deployment of managed services for industrial customers.

DLR and Évora University inaugurate unique test facility in Portugal.

Thursday, 28 April 2022

Solar thermal power plants use concentrated sunlight to first generate heat and then electricity. They are already in use today in particularly sunny regions, such as Spain, the USA or Chile. To further advance this technology and make it more competitive, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), together with the Portuguese University of Évora and European industrial partners, has built and commissioned a unique test facility. The Évora Molten Salt Platform (EMSP) is one of the world's first plants to use molten salt instead of thermal oil as a heat transfer medium. The official inauguration took place on 28 April 2022 in the presence of representatives of the project partners and the Portuguese and German governments.
