As the coordinating ministry for geoinformation, the Federal Ministry of the Interior is committed to promoting knowledge about the potential of remote sensing at many levels. Against this background, parliamentarians from all parliamentary groups met last Friday at the invitation of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for an exchange of information and knowledge on the topic of remote sensing at the German Bundestag in Berlin.

The parliamentarians were welcomed by the Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich, and the Chairman of the DLR Executive Board, Prof. Dr. Johann-Dietrich Wörner. In his welcoming address, Federal Minister of the Interior Dr. Friedrich spoke about the need to recognize and make greater use of the opportunities offered by technical innovations in order to promote Germany as a location for science and business. "Geoinformation is becoming increasingly important in practically all areas of life. Remote sensing allows this information to be used in new ways. These possibilities must be made known to a wide range of users in politics, business, science and administration".

During the course of the event, experts from the BKG, DLR and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) introduced the topic with specialist presentations. "This parliamentary breakfast offered an excellent opportunity to talk directly to parliamentarians about the potential uses of remote sensing and the steps that need to be taken in the future. This exchange of opinions was particularly important in the run-up to the 1st Strategy Forum "Opportunities and Possibilities of Remote Sensing for Public Administration", which will take place at EOC in Oberpfaffenhofen from October 13 to 14, 2011 under the patronage of Federal Minister of the Interior Dr. Friedrich," said Professor Stefan Dech, Director of the German Remote Sensing Data Center at EOC after the event, in which he reported on EOC's research and services in an overview presentation.
