The Federal Government’s Maritime Coordinator visits EOC
On 15 December 2014 Mr. Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, paid a visit to EOC. In his function as the federal government’s maritime coordinator Mr Beckmeyer was provided with an overview of the maritime safety activities undertaken at EOC by Prof. Stefan Dech and Prof. Richard Bamler, who focused on the responsibilities of the Maritime Safety Research Departments in Bremen and Neustrelitz. In addition, Prof. Günter Strunz described the Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information (ZKI), which is financed by Federal Ministry of the Interior, as an example of the successful transfer of insights gained from scientific research to routine application.
Prof. Richard Bamler explains how a combination of satellite-aided ship detection and an automatic identification system can lead to improved situational awareness.
