Daily Air Quality Forecasts with Sentinel-5P

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides for Europe and the rest of the world hourly updated forecasts for trace gases that affect our climate and air quality. The service now uses data products generated at EOC based on Copernicus Sentinel-5P (S5P) satellite data for its ozone forecasts. Although the ozone layer in the stratosphere provides us with a protective shield, ground-level ozone is a primary ingredient of urban smog, irritates the respiratory tract, and damages vegetation.

EOC is responsible for developing and operating the S5P payload ground segment and retrieving a number of geophysical products from TROPOMI, an up-to-date, multispectral spectrometer on board S5P. The validated S5P products that DLR provides (ozone, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde and cloud characteristics) are made available to the public in near-real-time (three hours after measurement).

Diego Loyola, the Senior Scientist in charge of DLR's S5P-TROPOMI activities, states, "The excellent results show that here in Europe we have achieved a very high standard in satellite missions investigating the composition of the atmosphere. That we could incorporate the TROPOMI ozone data into the CAMS system faster than anticipated was only possible with the intensive cooperation of scientists and engineers from ECMWF and DLR."
