Volcanic eruption on Galapagos
At the beginning of March, the La Cumbre volcano on an uninhabited island in the Galapagos archipelago erupted, endangering unique animal species found only there, such as the giant tortoise discovered there. The satellites of the European Copernicus program are monitoring the eruption.
Sentinel 5 Precursor (S5P), for example, measures the SO2 concentration in the atmosphere and the height of the volcanic cloud on a daily basis. The volcanic eruption emitted up to 2000 tons of SO2 into the atmosphere every day and the volcanic cloud extends over several thousand kilometers above the Pacific. At the EOC, various information products and animations are generated daily from the S5P data as part of the DLR project INPULS (https://atmos.eoc.dlr.de/inpuls/).
