The title replaces the former honorary title of DLR Senior Scientist and is recognized as one of DLR's highest distinctions for the achievements of outstanding scientists. The prize is awarded in two categories: Category A for excellent contributions in basic research and Category B for applications-oriented work with exceptional engagement in project work.
Prof. Dr. Christian Geiß was honoured in Category A for his outstanding scientific achievements. His research focuses on modeling and analysing the increasing risks in urban areas caused by natural dangers and extreme weather events with cascading effects, making use of remote sending and geodata with machine learning approaches.
For the first time the DLR board presented the newly created "DLR Prize - Sharing Knowledge with Public Stakeholders". This award honours the outstanding engagement of staff members who facilitate in an exemplary manner a dialog with public ministries, authorities and nongovernmental organisations in the the public interest. The prize underlines the importance of knowledge exchange as a strategic DLR goal.
Dr. Annekatrin Metz-Marconcini was honoured for her work in the DLR project "EO Solar". With this project she created a practice-oriented instrument based on high resolution earth observation data and comprehensive information on the solar potential of rooftops in Germany. "EO Solar" thus supports public policy makers, city planners and energy suppliers in achieving a sustainable energy transition. The data are available to the public via the eosolar.dlr.de portal.
