terrabyte at the EGU General Assembly 2025
Almost 19,000 participants from 120 countries were present at the European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025 in Vienna. Geoscientists from all disciplines of the earth, planetary and space sciences gathered here from all over the world to share their ideas. The Earth Observation Center (EOC), together with the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), used this six-day event to introduce the terrabyte project.
terrabyte is a High Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) platform of the Bavaria Academy of Sciences and operated by DLR und LRZ. This platform provides scientists with efficient access to Earth observation data, a professional processing environment, and tools for data analysis.
Next to the terrabyte stand, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) and the National Researach Data Infrastructure for Earth System Sciences (NFDI4Earth) were also present. A service tailored to the analysis of climate data and comparable to that of terrabyte is offered by DKRZ. And DLR, LRZ and DKRZ are members of the NFDI4Earth Consortium, which coordinates and deals with the data management digital requirements of Earth systems research. For that reason it was logical to have a joint programme at this event in order to give visitors an indication of current developments.
In addition to introducing terrabyte, the EGU furthered a thematic exchange with those responsible for similar infrastructure projects, such as the ESA infrastructure projects EarthCODE and APEx, and promoted science data and computer platforms and other HPC and cloud environments.
