CUP4SOIL

This action aims at a downstream service to support national and European agencies for reporting on soil health/quality and thus, contribute to the Land Degradation Monitoring (LDN) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 15.3.1) reporting. It further underpins the pre-operational Soil Monitoring System currently being developed within the ESA WorldSoils where DLR is responsible for all remote sensing based inputs. Using synergies between this action and the ESA WorldSoils project will streamline the activities and boost the user uptake. In cooperation with the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC), DLR will generate European-wide data products and indicators characterising soil health by exploiting the terrabyte facilities of the LRZ. Additionally, DLR develops a user community that tests and validates data products for monitoring soil health.

For generating the European-wide soil health image products, around 600.000 Sentinel-2 scenes are processed covering around 1000 Sentinel-2 tiles across Europe. The project uses the terrabyte platform facilities of the Leibnitz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ).
